IDEA Standards Chair Shares Attribute Schema Insights

Phil Barrios, Sr. Director, Corporate Marketing & E-Business, Hubbell Inc. and IDEA Standards Committee Chair, recently shared his thoughts about the Electrical Industry Attribute Schema on the NAED and NEMA blogs. Read his insights and share yours today.

In his post, Barrios makes reference to the ever-growing shift from a “full-service” to “self-service” society and how it's becoming more noticable that people are buying online instead of in line. His insights are supported by statistics from the National Retail Foundation and directly relate to the Attribute Schema the IDEA Standards Committee developed and will continue to enhance.

He goes on to explain how the Attribute Schema provides the means for manufacturers to provide standardized product details which help distributors and end-users to find, buy and sell more of their products online - a win-win for all. Spotlight Article: Update on Hubbell’s Acquisition of BURNDY®

Hubbell Incorporated (www.hubbell.com) recently announced the purchase of FCI Americas, Inc. (the business known as “BURNDY®”). BURNDY will continue to operate as a standalone business unit as part of Hubbell’s electrical systems products for the foreseeable future.

BURNDY (www.burndy.com), founded in 1924 and headquartered in Manchester, New Hampshire, is a leading manufacturer of connectors, cable accessories and tooling. BURNDY serves commercial and industrial markets and utility customers primarily in the United States, with 2008 sales of approximately $225 million.

“I am excited that we completed the purchase of BURNDY. Since we signed the definitive agreement in July, our management team has been coordinating with BURNDY and FCI to ensure a smooth transition. Our extensive interactions over that period of time have served to reinforce the outstanding fit we see between Hubbell and BURNDY and the business opportunities that can be realized over time,” said Timothy H. Powers, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Hubbell Incorporated. “BURNDY’s product quality, relationships with distributors and emphasis on people are a natural complement to Hubbell. We welcome the BURNDY employees to our family and look forward to serving our customers with a broader and deeper product line.”

Both Hubbell and BURNDY have been active participants in IDEA’s eCommerce initiatives for over 10 years. Tim Powers is a former IDEA Board of Directors Chair, Phil Barrios, Sr. Director, Corporate Marketing & E-Business at Hubbell, is the current IDEA Standards Committee Chair and Rich Brooks, E-Business Development Manager at BURNDY, is the Chair for the Product Information Sub-Committee currently focusing on UNSPSC and attributed data standards. The driving force behind Hubbell and BURNDY’s participation at IDEA is the work being done to create a solid foundation for future eCommerce and the value-add that IDEA provides to the industry.
