  • ARLINGTON, VA – The Industry Data Exchange Association, Inc. (IDEA), the official technology service provider and eBusiness standards body of the electrical industry, announces that it has licensed the UPC prefix blocks, which is commonly known in the wholesale electrical industry as the 98-series generic UPC numbers, from GS1 US, the official provider of company prefixes and bar code numbers.

This capability provides electrical manufacturers the opportunity to control the association of their products to what the industry end-users consider as commodity or generic products. The newly-redefined IDW field, “Non-Specific Manufacturer UPC” (previously named Common Item Number), enables the manufacturer to link their own unique product UPC number with the 98-series UPC number commonly used throughout the channel, and pass them on together, to their downstream customers.

This additional information will benefit electrical distributors by linking customer-order UPC numbers to the proprietary UPC numbers used by the manufacturers they purchase from. To further support the distributors who utilize IDEA’s Benchmark Pricing Service, the 98-series numbers have now been moved from the Common Item Number field to the actual UPC field.

GS1 US’ 98-series UPC numbers have been used without authorization in the electrical channel. IDEA now provides a legitimate pathway for the industry to utilize these codes. "IDEA licensed these prefix numbers to provide valid, registered and traceable UPC’s,” said Bob Gaylord, President and CEO, IDEA. “IDEA can authorize industry organizations to use these UPC numbers based on specific requests.”

For further information on these UPC’s and to obtain authorization for use, please contact IDEA or your IDEA Data Quality Analyst (DQA).
